Armati Army Lists for HyboriaIntroduction
Hyboria, and Conan the Cimmerian, were creations of American Science-Fiction and Fantasy writer Robert E. Howard in the 1930's. Set 12,000 years ago, Conan's adventures were continent-spanning as he fought his way across a 'pre-historic' Europe that was both familiar, yet different. I have been a Conan fan for many years, discovering Howard's stories about the same time I encountered Tony Bath's legendary 'Hyborian Wargames Campaign'. After I had completed my Armati Lord of the Rings Army List project, it was only a matter of time before someone on Warflute speculated about other fantasy novels that could be given the Armati treatment. Before I knew what I was doing, I was creating more Army Lists. Thankfully, the cultures of Hyboria were, to me at least, very similar to those of Medieval Europe and the Middle-East and their translation into Armati terms was fairly smooth. Thanks to Ianis Kalejs for digging out his copy of “Royal Armies of The Hyborean Age, A Wargamers Guide to the Age of Conan, wargame rules & unit descriptions” by Lin Carter & Scott Bizar, Fantasy Games Unlimited, copyright 1975; to John O'Connor's lists for Vis Magica for ideas; to Vincent Auger for his invaluable Armati List Constructor spread sheet; the glossary included in 'Conan the Swordsman' by de Camp, Carter and Nyberg; and to various members of the Armati community for thoughts and comments.
