Armati Army Lists for HyboriaZingara
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 W All HC are subject to Obligatory Charges. Zingara was a coastal Kingdom, south-west of Aquilonia, with a 'Feudal Spanish'-like culture. Zingaran Freebooters, or buccaneers, infested the Baracha Isles to the West, and sometimes supported field armies if Zingara's internal politics suited them. Bordering Pictland, Zingara also employed small numbers of Pictish mercenaries. The Zingaran banner was a black three pointed crown on a quartered orange and white field. Aquilonia
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG; 1 W Aquilonia was one of the most powerful kingdoms of the Hyborian Age. North and west, the Bossonian Marches produced hardy frontiersmen, used to fighting Cimmerian or Pictish raiders, the northern province of Gunderland bred stout-hearted pikemen, while the southern province of Poitain threw up hard-charging knights. The Black Legion and Black Dragons were Royal Guards units, clad all in black. Allies of Aquilonia include Argos, Ophir and Western Free Companies. Northern Mercenaries would be wandering Cimmerians and Aesir (from Asgard), enlisting for a time under the King of Aquilonia's banner and might be considered as Viking Bondi or Varangians. The culture of Aquilonia is High Medieval and I have based this list on 100 Years War French/English and Burgundy The banner of Aquilonian was a Gold Lion rampant on a Black field. Turan
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG CATs and HC are not subject to Obligatory Charges. Turan was a Hyrkanian Kingdom, west of the Sea of Vilayet. The Turanians were more sedentary than their eastern relatives, though more disciplined. Some Hyrkanian tribes served as Light Cavalry under Turanian command. Turanian Allies included Hyrkania, Zamora, Stygia and Eastern Free Companies. The Turanian army is based on that of the Early Sassanid Persians Army from Warflute. The Turanian banner depicts an Arabic style script across the centre of a green field (similar to the current Saudi Arabian flag. Argos
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG; 1 W Either Vanir OR Cimmerian Barbarian Foot may be taken, not both. Cimmerian Warbands are BP 3, Move: 9" Argos was one of the richest maritime countries of the Hyborian Age. The bulk of the army consisted of mercenaries. The Core units of Argossean Nobles and Guards should have gilded armour and shields as they were the 'elite of the elite'. Barachan Pirates were Argossean exiles and adventurers, based in the Baracha Isles, who plundered the western seaboard of Hyboria. When it was politically expedient, they might serve with an Argossean field army. Barabarian Foot were bands of Northern barbarians hired by the state. I have based this list on that of the Italian City States as Argos' wealth, and preference for mercenary, as opposed to native troops, seems reminiscent of late Fourteenth Century Italy. The banner of Argos features three gold balls centred vertically on a purple field. Argos was allied with Aquilonia, Ophir, Shem, and the Western and Southern Free Companies. Note: Argives were the citizens of historical Argos in Greece, Howard used the adjective Argosseans for the inhabitants of his kingdom of Argos. Vendhya
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG Vendhya was an ancient kingdom, far to the south-east. I have based this list on the Antiquity Indian list, with modifications from the Gupta and Shahid lists on the Warflute site. John O'Connor suggests that Vendhya was a mix of Classical and Moghul Indian cultures. Consequently, I have regraded the Noble Cavalry as a heavier, possibly caparisoned, heavy cavalry type. Vendhya's banner was a stylised elephant head with golden tusk balls on varying fields, dependent on the rank of the general. Vendhya was allied with Iranistan and the Eastern Free Companies. Nemedia
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (3 Max): 3 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG; 1 W *Aesir Mercenaries can form Shieldwall. Nemedia was one of the most powerful of the Hyborian kingdoms, and a constant enemy of Aquilonia. The Nemedian cavalry, drawn from the Nobility, looked down upon the infantry, mostly hired mercenaries. While capable of hard fighting, the infantry tended to be unenthusiastic. Battle field tactics seemed to involve hurling the infantry at the enemy's position to soften it up in preparation for a battle-winning charge by the cavalry. Aesir mercenaries would look a lot like Viking Bondi. The Nemedian army is based on that of the Teutonic Knights and German Imperialists. The banner of Nemedia was a Golden Dragon rampant on a scarlet field. Nemedia was allied with Corinthia and the Western Free Companies. Shem
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG Shem was a nation of City-States sandwiched between the Hyborian countries to the north, and ancient Stygia to the south. Frequently at war with each other, the Shemite cities would swiftly ally against any outside threat. Frequent conflict created a pool of battle-experienced soldiers available for hire by neighbouring states. The Kushite skirmishers are either slave-soldiers or mercenaries hired from the desert kingdom of Kush (whose inhabitants appear to be vaguely Nubian). I have loosely based Shem on the Seljuk and Assyrian Lists. Shemite banners varied from city to city - one was a sky blue field with a gold stylised sun in the centre. Shem was allied with the Southern Free Companies. Vanaheim
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 SH Bonus Terrain (3 Max): 3 GR; 1 SH; 1 W All Nobles and Warriors can form Shieldwall: sec. 7.8.6 Berserkers move 9" and have a BP of 3. They may not form Shieldwall. They fight until broken, they may not Break Off. Note: Berserkers are not key units. The north-western country of Vanaheim is described as bleak, cold and rugged. The Vanir are said to be red-haired and to favour horned helmets. I have based this army on that of the Vikings. Banners varied, but usually depict animal symbols. Hyrkania
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG Guard Cavalry is not subject to Obligatory Charge. The City Foot are from the trade route cities and tend to be used defensively. The Hyrkanians appear to be an Asiatic Horse type culture. I have based this list on a mixture of Sarmatian, Hun and Timurid Army Lists. Hyrkanian banners appear to be simple coloured flags or animal tail type standards. Hyrkania was allied to Turan. Asgard
>=Key units Core Terrain: 2 SH Bonus Terrain (4 Max): 4 GR; 2 SH; 2 W All Nobles, Experienced Warriors and Warriors can form Shieldwall: sec. 7.8.6 Reaver Warbands are BP: 3 Move: 9" Mammoths: I don't recall Mammoths in any of the Conan stories I have read, but they are suggested in John O'Connor's lists. For those uncomfortable with the idea of Mammoth riders, replace Mammoths with one extra unit of Reavers and one extra unit of Warriors. The Aesir of Asgard are described as having blond hair and favouring winged helmets. I have based the Asgard army on the Saxons/Later Saxons. Aesir banners would depict animal symbols. Asgard was allied with Cimmeria and the Western Free Companies. Kush
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (3 Max): 3 GR; 1 SH; 2 RG Kush seems to have been a fairly arid country, south of Stygia, heavily influenced by northern traders and raiders. Its peoples seem reminiscent of the 'Black Pharaohs' of Kush in the Sudan.I have based the Kushite List on the Nubian and Numidian Lists. Kush appears to have no allies, nor is any banner specified. Stygia
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 W; 1 RG
*Stygian Chariot Runners, and only Stygian Chariot Runers, may provide support to chariotry and only to chariotry. Stygia is an ancient nation, its roots lying back in the fallen kingdom of Acheron, destroyed by the Hyborians 3,000 years before Conan's time. Mainly desert, except for a fertile strip along the River Styx, Stygia most resembles Ancient Egypt. I have based the Stygian Army on the New Kingdom Egyptian List. The banner of Stygia was a black serpent on a green field. Stygia was allied with the Southern Free Company and Turan. Cimmeria
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 RG Bonus Terrain (5 Max): 5 GR; 4 SH; 2 RG *Crom's Men warband is BP:4 Move: 6" ** Raiders warbands are BP:3 Move: 9" All FT may form Shieldwall. Black haired and favouring plain helmets, the Cimmerians inhabited the bleak hills and dales south of the snow-girt mountains of Asgard and Vanaheim. The Cimmerians had an ancient feud with Vanaheim and often raided northern Aquilonia and Hyperborea. After considering the various Celtic armies, I have based the Cimmerians on the Picts. Cimmeria was allied with Asgard and the Western Free Companies. No Cimmerian banners are recorded but they probably followed some rendition of animal totems. Descriptions of the Cimmerians would indicate that they were a Warband army. Warbands have a hard time in Armati. During the design of both the Cimmerian Lists, there was some debate as to whether to present a 'practical' army in games terms, or one true to the books. As I present both versions of the Cimmerian List here, players may take their own choice. Brythunia
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG The most easterly of the Hyborian kingdoms, Brythunia was ruled by an autocratic king. Red is the predominant national colour and the troops are fairly uniformed. I have based the Brythunian List on those of the Nicean Byzantine, Sicilian and French. The Brythunian banner was a black horizontal bar on a red field. Brythunia is allied with the Western Free Companies. Corinthia
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG Royal Knights are not subject to Obligatory Charge. Corinthia was a collection of City States, so each contingent would have a uniform and banner derived from its home city. O'Connor says that Corinthia was reminiscent of Ancient Greece, while Carter and Bizar indicate more of a Macedonian feel. Mike Stelzer, in his Hyborian Lists for DBA, suggests early Low Countries without any bow. I have based this list on Alexandrian Macedonian. Corinthia was allied with Nemedia and the Western Free Company. Hyperborea
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (3 Max): 2 GR; 2 RG; 1 W All FT may form Shieldwall as per Sec. 7.8.6 Hyperborea was a witch-haunted, non-Hyborian realm, to the north-east of the Hyborian kingdoms. The inhabitants were described as tall, black-haired, and pale skinned. Their settlements were surrounded by cyclopean stone walls. The Noble Foot, Foot, and Host were social and economic groupings within free Hyperborean society. Hence they are all able to form Shieldwall. The Slave Levy were expended with little regard for cost and tended to be used as 'blocks' to hold up an enemies' advance. I have based this army list on the Slavs and the Rus. Mammoth riders are attested in both O'Connor and Stelzer. Again, if players are uncomfortable with the concept of mammoth riders, an extra unit, each, of Foot and Host may be substituted instead. Hyperborea was allied with the Western Free Companies (though without Shemites). The Hyperborean banner was a hand, palm out, fingers closed, on a dark field (the colour of which depended on the General). Zamora
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 W Zamoran Regulars tend to wear white with red trim. Described as a mix of Arabic and European feudal types, or as a Granadian style army, I have based the Zamorans on the Almoravide list. The infantry would be possibly dressed similarly to Crusaders, while the cavalry would appear more Arabic. The banner of Zamora was a white crescent on a red field. Zamora was allied to Turan, Nemedia, the Western Free Companies, and the Eastern Free Companies. Ophir
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG; 1 W Another of the Hyborian kingdoms, Ophir has a medieval feel to it. I have based this army on that of the (pre-Hundred Years War) French. Nobles would bear their own devices and colours. The Royal Knights would wear blue uniforms with the national symbol and have gilded armour. The regulars favoured red or scarlet. The banner of Ophir was a red or scarlet disk on a blue field. Ophir was allied with Aquilonia, Nemedia and the Western Free Companies. Darfar
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (3 Max): 3 GR; 1 SH; 2 W Cannibal Warbands are not Core Troops. They move 9"; BP 3 and may not break off. Darfar was famous for its cannibals. I have based Darfar on the Nubian List. Darfar is not recorded as allied to any other state. Koth
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG Koth was one of the most southerly of the Hyborian Kingdoms. Both O'Connor and Stelzer comment on the 'Byzantine' appearance of the Kothian army, Bizar only says that Koth has a 'medieval' feel to it. On the edge of the Hyborian sphere, and nestled between Shem and Turan, Koth would probably have mixed elements from all three cultures' military science. I have based the army of Koth loosely on that of the Nikephorian Byzantine. Nomad Spahis are armoured and lance-armed light cavalry. The Black Guard are a form of praetorian guard recruited from the Black states south of Stygia (probably mainly Kushites). All Kothian troops are heavily armoured. Uniforms favour shades of white with yellow trim. The banner of Koth was a black triangle on a yellow field. Koth was allied to Shem, Ophir, Corinthia and the Western Free Companies. Keshan
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (4 Max): 3 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG; 1 W Keshan was the most northerly of the Black Kingdoms. O'Connor and Stelzer disagree over the availability of mounted units. I am of the opinion that, lying on the upper Styx, Keshan would have, like Nubia to Egypt, experienced two-way trade with Stygia and countries further north and east. I have based the Keshani List on that of Numidia. Keshan was allied with Zemabwei and Punt. Punt
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (4 Max): 3 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG; 1 W Punt, like Keshan, lay on the River Styx and I have postulated that Punt would have also benefited from trade with the northern states of Stygia and Shem. The Puntish Guards are the same troops as appear in the Stygian List as Black Slave Soldiers and are of the same origin. I have very loosely based the Punt List on that of Numidia, though Nubian or Egyptian figures would do as well. Punt was allied with Keshan. Cimmeria Version 2
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 RG Bonus Terrain (5 Max): 5 GR; 4 SH; 2 RG Warrior warband are BP: 4 Move: 6'" **Crom's Men warband is BP:4 Move: 6" *** Raiders warbands are BP:3 Move: 9" Black haired and favouring plain helmets, the Cimmerians inhabited the bleak hills and dales south of the snow-girt mountains of Asgard and Vanaheim. The Cimmerians had an ancient feud with Vanaheim and often raided northern Aquilonia and Hyperborea. I have based the Cimmerians on the British. Khitai
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG; 1 W Khitai was a mysterious kingdom, or collection of warring city-states, far to the east. Both O'Connor and Stelzer agree that the culture is Han Chinese and so I have adapted the Han list for that of Khitai. Khitai banners were predominantly red or yellow with the pictograph of the army or city-state in black. Khitai was allied with the Eastern Free Companies and other Khitai states. Khauran
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG Khauran was a small, easterly Hyborian Kingdom. The Hyborian elements seem to have, perhaps, composed of a small noble class inserted over a larger, Shemite or Turanian underclass. The Hyborian rulers seem to have absorbed much of their subjects' culture. Stelzer suggests an Abbasid dynasty-type culture, while O'Connor suggests Islamic Caliphate. I have opted to base this list on the Arab Emirates. The banner of Khauran was dark green. Khauran was allied with Khoraja. Khoraja
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 1 RG Khoraja was one of the most southerly of the Hyborian Kingdoms. Like Khauran, it seems to have consisted of a small Hyborian noble class inserted over an existing Shemite or Turanian lower class. Khoraja's army consisted of a high proportion of mercenaries. I have based this army list on that of the Abbassid Arabs. The Khorajan banner was a diagonal silver or white bar on a pink field. Khoraja was allied to Khauran and the Western Free Companies. Picts
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 RG Bonus Terrain (5 Max): 5 GR; 4 SH; 2 RG Core Warband may form deep. All Warband are not subject to Obligatory Charge and are BP: 3 Move 9". The Picts were a group of forest-dwelling peoples, divided into tribes named after their totem animal. Their culture was similar to that of the eastern woodland native Americans. I have based the Pict list on that of the Dacians. Zembabwei
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 W Bonus Terrain (4 Max): 4 GR; 1 SH; 2 W Warband BP: 3 Move: 9" Core Warband may deploy in Flank Zones. Lying south of Punt on the upper River Styx, Zembabwei had a Zulu-like culture, though with more troop-types available. I have loosely based this army on the Gallic List. Border Kingdom
>=Key units Core Terrain: 1 GR Bonus Terrain (2 Max): 2 GR; 1 SH; 2 RG The Border Kingdom was a collection of warring petty principalities that were slowly coalescing into an organised state. Alliances would form to resist incursions from Cimmeria, Nemedia or Brythunia, before collapsing into chaos again. I have based the Border Kingdom on the Polish-Lithuanian List. Allies could include other Border Kingdom armies, or the Western, Southern or Eastern Free Companies. Free Companies
>=Key units Terrain: The Free Company uses the terrain list of its opponent. Southern Free Company Tribal Warrior WB are BP: 3 Move: 9". Free Companies were mercenary units of up to army size who offered their services to states, city-states, and free cities. Free Companies were colourful and diverse, though their origins and recruiting grounds would tend to skew their formations in favour of regionally available troop types. For example, Core and initial Bonus troops in a Western Free Company would be Ophirians, Kothans, Zingarans, etc, those in a Southern Free Company would be Shemites or Stygians, and those in an Eastern Free Company would be Turanians or Venhyans. A nation-state with Free Company allies may choose to replace up to half its bonus list with units to the same value drawn from the appropriate Free Company list. Free Companies were allied with other Free Companies. |
