Heroes of Middle-Earth

Back to Middle Earth Army Lists

After much consideration, I have removed several 'heroic' creatures from the basic lists and concentrated them in this section.

The Army Lists for Middle-Earth should function perfectly well for most players. However, there is always a group who, either because they have the figures, or because they like an extra layer of chrome in their game, will wish to have a hero in their army. I define as a 'hero' any particularly outstanding leader or magical creature which either replaces the Army General, or serves as a unit in its own right.

Orcs: Moria, Dol Guldur, and the Misty Mountains

Moria: The Balrog

DescriptionQtyUnitFVPROTWeaponsEach
>Balrog1EL5-3-2+2Panic/Various14

The Balrog is a huge, terrifying fire demon and Panics all other units it contacts, except Noldor FT and HC. Panic cancels any opposing unit's Impetus and causes it to fight with its Special FV against the Balrog. The Balrog moves at 12" per turn and is not subject to obligatory charges. Unlike an Elephant, the Balrog is not vulnerable to Light Infantry. The Balrog is costed and fielded as a separate unit, though it can replace the general. If the Balrog contacts, or is contacted by, Gandalf, both vanish in a flash of white and red flame to carry on their battle deep beneath the Earth.

Misty Mountains: Bolg

Bolg, the son of Azog - slayer of Thror and leader of the Goblin Armies during the War of the Dwarves and the Orcs - led the Goblin Army at the Battle of the Five Armies. As a mighty leader of Goblins, Bolg adds +1 to all Goblin units within 6" of him during the Melee phase. He is fielded as a General.

Dol Guldur: Lieutenant of Sauron

When Sauron reoccupied Barad-dur, he left Dol Guldur under a trusted Lieutenant, who may have been a Nazgûl. The Lieutenant of Sauron causes Panic in any unit attacking a unit he is with. The Paniced unit fights with its Special Combat Value. The Lieutenant is fielded as a General.

Dwarves of Erebor and the Iron Hills

Dwarves: Dain II

A doughty warrior, Dain II had fought at Azanulbizar, the final battle in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs in Third Age 2799, where he slew Azog - the slayer of Thror. After the fall of Smaug and the Battle of the Five Armies in Third Age 2941, Dain II, who already ruled the Iron Hills, became King under the Mountain. Dain adds +1 to all Dwarf units within 6" of him during the Melee phase. He may be taken as a General or bought as part of a unit of Hearth Guard.

If Dain is bought as a Hearth Guard unit, this is in addition to those available in the List, but Dain cannot leave the unit.

Elves of Mirkwood

Elves: Thranduil

A Sindarin Elf from Lindon, Thranduil established his Kingdom in Mirkwood before Second Age 1000. Despite attacks by giant spiders and orcs and a war with the Dwarves (of Erebor?), this kingdom survived for more than two Ages of Middle-Earth. Thranduil led the Elvish forces at the Battle of the Five Armies, as well as repulsing an attack from Dul Guldur during the War of the Ring. Thranduil is a General and negates Panic on a unit he is with if this is caused by a Balrog, the Mouth of Sauron, or the Lieutenant of Sauron. He adds +1 to any Elf archer unit within 6" during the Missile phase.

She can negate Panic on a unit she is with if this is caused by the Mouth of Sauron, the Lieutenant of Sauron or the Lord of the Nazgûl. In addition, if she moves into contact with the Witch-King of Angmar/Lord of the Nazgûl, he is instantly destroyed, though Eowyn is also removed from play, stricken by the Black Breath.

Mordor

Mordor: The Witch King of Angmar/the Lord of the Nazgûl

The Witch-King of Angmar/Lord of the Nazgûl must be purchased in addition to the army, as below. He will appear initially as the Witch-King and perform exactly as a General. Any enemy unit within 6" of him suffers from Panic and fights with it's Special FV. If the unit he is with is broken, or if he is otherwise dispersed, he is immediately removed from play. All Troll, Olog-hai, Goblin, Uruk-hai, Orc and warg-rider units under his command must immediately take a Routed-Into check (warg-riders and Goblin LI or SI routing on a "1-2"). If they pass the Routed-Into Check, they may carry on as normal. If the Witch-King is removed from play due to the rout of a unit he is with, he will reappear on his army's baseline in 1- 3 turns (d6/2) on his winged mount as the Lord of the Nazgûl. As the Lord of the Nazgûl he can engage, and be engaged, as an unit in his own right.

DescriptionQtyUnitFVPROTWeaponsEach
>Lord of the Nazgûl1HC5-1-2+2Darts/Sword15

The Lord of the Nazgûl fires darts to Mounted Javelin range (6") as LC (ie 360 degree arc), and may fire over intervening troops. His winged mount moves between 10" - 20" a turn, unless it lands. While airborne he cannot engage units, nor join units of his own side, though he may still fire darts. He can be fired on by units if within half range of them. He may fly over any unit. All enemy units within 6" of him suffer from Panic and fight with their Special FV. To engage a unit in combat, he must first slow his movement to 10" for a turn and then may land and engage as above. His winged mount may move up to 6" a turn on the ground. After he becomes airborne, the Lord of the Nazgûl may initially move no faster than 10" for the first turn he is aloft, and may then move at normal speed thereafter. If he is slain in his winged mount form, all the Troll, Olog-hai, Goblin, Uruk-hai, warg-rider and Orc units in his army automatically rout. This may cost the Mordor player the battle. If the Witch-King is contacted by Eowyn, he may not return as the Lord of the Nazgûl.
